1890s
RECREATION

Skating on canals and on rivers was popular. This scene in 1892 shows a skating group, with the Fifth Street bridge across the Colorado River in the background. Built in 1886, it was the first bridge in Colorado which was financed by the state, and was 740 feet long.

Cropping and photo augmenting were used judiciously for the Grand Junction History in Pictures web site, mainly to remove obvious tears or to lighten up a picture that had become dark through age, but the above photo makes for a striking exception. The wording 'Skating on the Grand - 92' is clearly visible - as is the annotation on the upper left, 'Photo by Frank McClintock' - adding to the outstanding historical interest of this photograph.
