How to Use Our Site

We want to make your experience with the Grand Junction History in Picture Project web site as enjoyable and educational as possible. While we believe that the site has been designed for easy navigation choices, we thought that a few tips might be helpful:

  • The web site is best viewed with Internet Explorer, Netscape and Opera Browser Versions 4.0 or better. No JAVA script is used, and all of the history pages have been optimized for reasonably fast download (no more than 35 seconds using a 28.8 modem). Pages with exceptional download times are the Timeline and Bibliography. Please remember that many of the pages are image-intensive; however, most of the images are black and white.

  • The site font is Arial Narrow; if your pages do not appear to look "right," you can set Arial Narrow as your default font. How? In Internet Explorer: go to Tools, Internet Options, General, Fonts. In Netscape: go to Edit, Preferences, Appearance, Fonts, Allow documents to use other fonts.

  • Although the site is viewable with monitor settings of 640x480 pixels, settings of 800x600 pixels are optimal. Optimal color settings for your monitor are True Color, 32 bit, if available. Change your monitor settings and color settings by right-clicking on your Desktop, go to Preferences then Settings: however, if you change your settings, you may be prompted to restart your computer and your desktop settings may have a different appearance.

  • All of the Decades are divided into Categories - with one exception: the Pre-1880s, which has its own set of Categories: Geology, Paleontology, Prehistoric Indians, Ute Indians, Trails, Explorers and New Treaties. These Pre-1880s Categories truly reflect the pre-settlement history of the Grand Junction area.

  • There are eight Categories to each of the other Decades: People, Community, Business, Education, Agriculture, Transportation, Culture and Recreation. By organizing our history into these Categories, the nature and scope of our community's changes - and the people behind those changes - are chronicled to reflect the area's tremendous diversity and potential.

  • Each historical item in both the Decade and Category pages has both text and a picture - by following the link "Click for larger image," you will be transferred to a larger version of the picture with the corresponding text repeated. To return to a Decade or Category page, simply click on the desired link.

  • All of the pages in the web site can be easily printed: however, you should set your margin settings to the maximum printable space (not more than 1/2" on all four sides if possible). Please keep in mind that we cannot guarantee your printed pages will match exactly the site's appearance on your computer monitor.

What does this mean?
When you see this icon, it denotes that an image has a special story - perhaps a technical enhancement or an aspect that you might find interesting!

Please Note: If you maximize any of the pages by using the Maximize icon in the top right-hand corner of your browser window, the bottom navigation frame may disappear; to retrieve it, simply use the Minimize icon.

You can easily move throughout the Decades and the Categories by clicking onto the links on every page; you can also transfer between the two sets of pages by clicking the Decades or Categories link in the bottom left-hand corner of the navigation frame.
